José Mourinho, the Inter Milan coach, was assistant to Bayern’s Louis van Gaal at Barcelona between 1997 and 2000.

Both coaches have already won the trophy and the winner will join the exclusive club of coaches who have guided more than one team to success in the competition.

The teams have met four times previously. The most recent clash came in the 2006-07 Champions League group stage when Patrick Vieira's late equaliser earned Inter a 1-1 draw in Munich, cancelling out Roy Makaay's opener.

Earlier in the competition, Bayern won 2-0. And in the Uefa Cup, in the 1988-89 season, Inter won 2-0 in Germany, but Bayern went through on the away goals rul by winning 3-1 in Italy.

Bayern's record in European Cup finals is four wins and three defeats. The wins are: Atlético Madrid (1974), Leeds (1975), St-Etienne (1976), 2001 (Valencia). The defeats: 1982 (Aston Villa), 1987 (Porto), 1999 (Manchester United).

The Germans also won the 1967 Uefa Cup Winners' Cup final and 1996 Uefa Cup final.

Inter are hoping to secure their first European success since 1965. They won the trophy in 1964 (Real Madrid), before beating Benfica. They also loss in 1967 (Celtic) and 1972 (Ajax).

Inter also appeared in four Uefa Cup finals in the 1990s, winning in 1991, 1994 and 1998 but losing in 1997.

Both teams are missing key players. Inter are without Brazilian defensive midfielder Thiago Motta while Bayern’s Franck Ribery failed with his appeal against his red card in the first leg of the semi-finals against Lyon.

Rankings at stake

There's more to the Champions League final than simply Inter Milan vs. Bayern Munich. The game will also decide the future of Italian and German club football in the top European competition.

If Bayern wins, Germany will get a fourth entry in the Champions League starting in 2011-12 and Italy's entries will be reduced from four to three.

"Inter needs to win for the good of Italian football," said AC Milan vice president Adriano Galliani, in a rare gesture of support for the city rival.

Under Uefa's complicated ranking system, Italy enters the final with just a 0.155-point lead over Germany.

-If Inter wins: Italy will retain its four entries and Germany will remain with three.

-If Inter wins on penalties: Only the result at 90 or 120 minutes counts in the Uefa rankings, so Germany will get four entries and Italy will be reduced to three.

-If Bayern wins: Germany will get four entries and Italy will be reduced to three.

Key clash

Mark van Bommel v Wesley Sneijder: Inter may have the edge on the German champions in defence and attack, but if they are to dominate the midfield, they will need the vibrant, creative Sneijder to overcome his cynical, resolute countryman.

It was van Bommel who played the key role in helping Bayern to progress at Old Trafford in the quarter-final, using every ounce of his experience to staunch Manchester United’s attacks and to shape the game to his will. He will need all of that, and more, to keep the former Real Madrid player quiet.

Sneijder was a peripheral figure for much of his time at the Bernabeu, but he has blossomed into the hub of Inter’s play under Jose Mourinho. He is the supply line to Samuel Eto’o and Diego Milito, and Bayern’s chances of overcoming the odds to beat the Italian champions will rest largely on Van Bommel’s ability to quiet his threat.

Talking tactics

Bayern may have been keen to characterise this as a direct clash between the German side’s attacking style and Inter’s defensive emphasis, but such a summary is overly simple.

Both teams, in reality, thrive on the break, with Inter exploiting the pace of Sneijder and Samuel Eto’o and Bayern looking to Arjen Robben to wreak havoc as he cuts in from the right.

There is a chance, though, that Jose Mourinho will look to catch Bayern as he did Chelsea in the second leg of their last 16 tie, instructing his team to attack from the off, hoping to surprise Louis van Gaal’s team, who will be expecting the Italian champions to approach the game with a degree of caution.
